" Mother to Son"
" Mother to Son", released in 1922 by Langston Hughes, was one of the most renowned poems he had written. Barnes was African-American and was born in 1902. While residing in the 1900's Hughes and his family skilled the struggles of racism, discrimination, and slavery. Consequently , this composition is not only words of support from a mother to a son, yet also terms of confidence to the whole African American community. This composition of motivation let the community know that the difficulties that they every had to go through at the time were felt by all and that they weren't alone in the struggle. Barnes wrote this from the standpoint of a mom encouraging her son to keep going no matter what hardships he may experience. She explained that life is hard and he can not the only person who has were required to endure the expertise of life's hard lessons.
The poem passes on a message from a mother to her son training him that he must remain optimistic despite the obstacles that life would bring. The mother compares her life into a set of old broken down wooden stairs. Using the metaphor that " your life for me is not any set of crystal stairs" (2, 20), she suggests to her son that her life has not been easy or perhaps pleasant possibly. The mom continues to let her know son from the obstacles that she has conquer by conveying the old wood made stairs. States " it includes had tacks in this and splinters and panels torn up and locations with no floor covering on the floor -- bare. " (3-7)
The tacks within the stairs had been placed generally there by another individual representing the wrong doings with her by somebody else and the splinters may have been the consequence of her actions. These tacks and splinters symbolize the cruel actuality of existence, as opposed to the ideal fantasy life, such as having a set of " crystal stairs". Through the tone of voice of the mother, Hughes uses the set of stairs like a metaphor for life and the struggles that they can bring.
